Types of Explosion Protection
Types of Explosion Protection
Explosion protection methods are designed to either prevent explosions from occurring or to minimize their impact if they do.
Intrinsic Safety (Ex i, EN 60079-11)
Limits electrical and thermal energy in equipment so it cannot ignite a hazardous atmosphere.
Increased Safety (Ex e, EN 60079-7)
Prevents sparks and hot surfaces in electrical equipment by design improvements.
Pressurization or Purging (Ex p, EN 60079-2)
Keeps flammable gases or dusts out of equipment by maintaining a protective pressure using clean air or inert gas.
Non-sparking / Non-incendive (Ex n, EN 60079-15)
Equipment is designed to not produce sparks or heat under normal operation.
Flameproof / Explosion-proof Enclosure (Ex d, EN 60079-1)
Contains the explosion inside the enclosure and prevents flames or hot gases from escaping.
Oil Immersion (Ex o, EN 60079-6)
Parts immersed in oil to isolate from explosive atmosphere.
Powder filing (Ex q, EN 60079-5)
Prevents transmission of explosion outside.
Protection “tD” (Ex t, EN 60079-31)
Dust explosion proof.
Explosion Protection (Mitigation)
Flameproof / Explosion-proof Enclosure (Ex d, EN60079-1)
Limits electrical and thermal energy in equipment so it cannot ignite a hazardous atmosphere.
Explosion Venting
Limits electrical and thermal energy in equipment so it cannot ignite a hazardous atmosphere.
Explosion Suppression
Limits electrical and thermal energy in equipment so it cannot ignite a hazardous atmosphere.
Explosion Isolation
It prevents an explosion from spreading to other connected equipment or areas.
