Hazardous Area Classification

Hazardous Area Classification

Hazardous areas are classified into Zones or Divisions based on how often and how long explosive atmospheres(gas, vapor, or dust mixed with air) may be present. This classification determines the level of protection required for equipment and installations needed to operate safely in those environments.

IEC/ATEX Zone System (Used internationally and in Europe)
Based on: IEC 60079 and ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU

For gases and vapors:

Zone 0

Explosive atmosphere is present continuously or for long periods

Zone 1

Likely to be present in normal operation.

Zone 2

Unlikely, and if it occurs, it exists briefly.
